Side mirror glass vs. the complete assembly
Updated September 2, 2026
Short answer
You may be able to replace just the mirror glass, including certain glass fitted with heat or a blind-spot indicator. The complete assembly is a different part that may include the housing, adjuster, folding mechanism, wiring, lamps, and camera. A blind-spot icon alone does not mean you need the complete assembly. The visible damage, what still works, and the exact vehicle determine what needs checking.

These observations help identify the likely path. They do not diagnose the mirror or confirm the required part.
- What you can see
- The reflective glass or its backing is damaged. The housing, base, adjustment, folding action, wiring, lamps, and camera appear intact.
- Likely path
- A glass-only repair may be possible.
- What still needs checking
- Exact vehicle, glass shape, backing, connectors, and installed features
- What you can see
- The glass is loose or missing, but the housing and base appear intact.
- Likely path
- The glass, backing, or another service part may be needed.
- What still needs checking
- Attachment points, wiring, connectors, and the current parts catalog
- What you can see
- The housing, mounting base, or hinge is cracked, loose, or out of position.
- Likely path
- The repair may extend beyond the glass.
- What still needs checking
- Whether the damaged piece is serviced separately or requires a complete assembly
- What you can see
- The mirror no longer adjusts or folds as equipped.
- Likely path
- The adjuster, motor, hinge, wiring, or assembly may need attention.
- What still needs checking
- The source of the failure and the service parts available for that vehicle
- What you can see
- A signal, lamp, camera, or other mirror feature is damaged or no longer works.
- Likely path
- A feature-specific part or larger mirror repair may be needed.
- What still needs checking
- Vehicle equipment, connections, available service parts, and the required repair procedure

When replacing only the glass may be possible
A glass-only repair may fit when the break stops at the reflective glass or its backing. An intact outer shell and working controls support that path, but do not prove that the adjuster or connections are sound. VA Auto Glass still confirms the exact part and equipment. See our side mirror glass replacement service for local service details.
When the repair may involve more than glass
A cracked base or hinge is a mounting problem, while dead adjustment or folding can point to a mechanism or electrical fault. Damage to a signal, lamp, or camera adds another feature-specific question. None automatically proves that the full assembly is required: the vehicle's parts catalog may list a smaller service part.
Mirror features must match the vehicle
The damaged side, year, make, model, VIN, trim, option package, glass shape, backing, and connector can change the part. So can heat, blind-spot indication, auto-dimming, memory, power-fold, turn-signal, puddle-lamp, and camera equipment. A Stellantis service bulletin even identifies a build-date connector change that requires a specified adapter for certain vehicles. Camera equipment can also change the repair procedure; it does not create one universal procedure for every vehicle.
What determines the quote
The part and labor depend on the exact vehicle equipment and the extent of the damage. VA Auto Glass confirms the repair route before quoting. The quote form does not promise a fixed price or completion time.
Mobile service or the McLean shop
Qualified glass-only mirror work may be completed through mobile service in Northern Virginia. Larger or mechanical mirror damage may need the McLean shop at 1800 Wilson Lane, McLean, VA 22102. The vehicle details and damage must be reviewed before the service location is confirmed.
What to send with your request
With the vehicle parked, send the year, make, and model; ZIP code; damaged side; one clear photo showing the full mirror; and a closer photo of the glass, housing, base, and hinge when visible. Note any loose parts, exposed connectors, or damaged wiring without disturbing them. Tell us what still works, including adjustment, folding, heat, blind-spot indication, signal, lamp, and camera when equipped. We may also ask for the VIN, trim, or option information.
Why these examples do not replace your vehicle information
The cited documents apply only to the models, equipment, and conditions they name. They show why two damaged mirrors can need different parts. Always use the current catalog and repair procedure for the car being serviced.
Side mirror questions
- Can I replace just the side mirror glass?
- Sometimes. Separate mirror glass is available for some vehicles, including some glass with heat or a blind-spot indicator. The housing, backing, connections, vehicle equipment, and remaining functions still need to be checked.
- Does a blind-spot indicator mean I need the complete assembly?
- No. Some vehicles use feature-matched replacement glass. The glass must still match the vehicle, backing, equipment, and connector.
- What if everything except the glass still works?
- That supports a possible glass-only path, but it is not a diagnosis. Send clear photos and describe each fitted function so the surrounding mirror and part can be checked.
- What should I choose on the quote form?
- Choose Other / not sure. Send the year, make, model, ZIP, damaged side, a clear photo, and what still works. VA Auto Glass will review the details before confirming the route and quote.
Not sure which mirror part you need?
Choose Other / not sure. Send the vehicle, ZIP, damaged side, a clear photo, and what still works. We'll confirm which route to quote and whether it fits mobile service or a shop visit.
