What to do after a side window is smashed
Updated September 9, 2026
Short answer
Keep away from the loose glass. If the break-in may still be active, put distance between you and the car. Before cleanup, photograph the vehicle, the damaged window, the area around it, and anything missing. Then protect the parked vehicle from rain and send the vehicle details, service ZIP, exact window, and photos for a quote.
Start outside the car
Call 911 for an injury, immediate danger, or a crime in progress. Do not reach through the broken opening or touch glass that is still attached to the door or trim. Keep children and pets away from the vehicle until the loose pieces are contained.
Photograph the damage before cleanup
Take a wide photo of the vehicle and close photos of the broken window and surrounding damage. Photograph the inside without reaching through loose glass. Record the time and location, identify the exact window, and note or photograph anything missing. These details can help with a police report, an insurance claim, and the glass quote.
Clean only what you can reach safely
Wear work gloves and remove only visible, loose fragments you can reach without putting a hand through broken glass. Keep children and pets away. Do not take the door apart, pull at glass held in the frame, or use the window switch. VA Auto Glass clears fragments from the door and cabin as part of side window replacement.
Keep rain out while the car is parked
Move the vehicle to a secure, dry place if that can be done safely. Otherwise, towing can keep you from moving a car whose condition is uncertain. A temporary cover may protect a parked vehicle from rain and further exposure. It is not a repair or proof that the car is ready for the road.
Decide whether the car should move
Do not drive if glass is still loose, fragments can enter the cabin, surrounding damage affects the door or body around the opening, or the driver's visibility, mirror, controls, seat, or seat belt cannot be used normally. If you cannot confirm those points safely, leave the car parked and use mobile service or towing.
Police, insurance, and repair are separate decisions
Police reporting depends on the incident and jurisdiction. In Fairfax County, eligible nonemergency vandalism and theft from a motor vehicle can be reported through the county's online system. If you may make an insurance claim, note the time, date, location, and apparent damage, notify the insurer promptly, and protect the parked vehicle from further damage. Coverage depends on the policy, cause of loss, deductible, and insurer process. Read the insurance steps before comparing that path with a cash quote.
Send the details needed for side glass service
Send the vehicle year, make, and model, your service ZIP, the exact damaged window, and clear photos. Include the VIN only if the team requests it. On the quote form, choose Door or side window. The form starts a quote request. It does not book an appointment.
Questions after a side window is smashed
- What if the glass is intact but the window dropped or will not move?
- Use the broken side window or failed regulator guide for that mechanical symptom.
